What type of deal to go for?
These days there are a lot of different types of mobile phones and tariffs. Not sure which is best for your company? Here’s your main options.
Phone & Contract
This is the most common type of plan, especially favoured by personal users. You pay monthly for the handset and specified number of minutes, texts and data usually over a 24-month contract. At the end of the 2 years, you own and keep the mobile phone.
Often people continue to pay the full monthly charge, even after the initial contract period has expired, despite the fact that they will have fully paid for the handset element. If you’re happy to keep the same handset then it is worth considering moving to a SIM only deal.
Sim Only
If you already have a reliable phone that you are happy with you don’t need a plan that provides a phone, so it should be fine to go with a SIM Only business plan. SIM only contracts offer great benefits like unlimited calls and texts, and an agreed data allowance. You are however committed to the contract for a minimum of 12 months. Your phone needs to be unlocked otherwise it will not work on any network.
UK Businesses can lease mobile devices, which when combined with a SIM Only deal is a great way to keep your technology up to date, whilst keeping costs low. At the end of the lease you can keep the device for a small fee, hand it back, or start a new lease with the latest handset or tablet.
Business Sharer Plans
If you need phones for your whole team or just one department, it could be cost effective to go with a shared data plan.
Each user will have access to their own data plus a shared pot of data. Phones and tablets can be added to the account at any time and you can increase or decrease your usage allowances.
This makes data use across your mobile accounts easier to manage when use fluctuates month to month and by user.
Further considerations
The EU ‘roam like at home’ rule means you can use contracted minutes, texts and data while travelling in any other EU country without paying additional roaming charges. This is intended for occasional travellers, where you spend more time at home than abroad, subject to fair use policy. Your limits still apply as if you were home, so checking you have enough before you travel is advised.
For trips further afield, you can add an international bundle which allows you to use your calls, texts and data plan anywhere in the world for a flat daily fee, giving you peace of mind and predictable spend whilst you are away.
Unlimited data may seem like a good idea, but do you really need that much? Viewing web pages and sending emails use very little data, so if that’s all you will be doing then you could get by on a 2GB or 5GB plan.
However, if you travel most of the time and away from your WiFi, then you may need anywhere up to 10GB or 20GB for heavy users.

You might be tempted to skip insurance for your phone, but it could prove to be a lifesaver. Mobile insurance will cover lost and stolen handsets as well as any accidental damage. Most insurance companies will be able to ship a replacement to you very quickly at no extra cost.
We recommend investing in a protection pack. A good quality case and screen protector will save your mobile devices from the majority of knocks and scrapes.
Whilst a stolen mobile phone or laptop is a headache, the more serious impact is data theft. With an increasing number of employees using their own devices for work purposes, any stolen or lost device that is not encrypted or password protected, can put your corporate data at risk.
Mobile Device Management (MDM) is cloud security software to protect corporate emails and documents on phones, tablets and laptops via managed security policies, device pin lock and jailbreak detection.
MDM software monitors and controls devices remotely. If a device is compromised, it can be remotely locked or wiped.
MDM can also protect corporate data held on employees’ own devices (BYOD). Mobile Application Management (MAM) protection requires a pin to open corporate app data, restricts the sharing data between apps and prevents saving of data to personal storage.
